SEER Calculator: Estimate Your Annual Energy Savings
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It's the standard measure of how efficiently a heating and cooling system performs over an entire season. The higher the SEER rating, the less electricity the system uses to deliver the same amount of heating or cooling.
Older central air conditioning systems installed before 2010 typically carry a SEER rating of 8–10. Modern heat pumps regularly achieve SEER ratings of 18–22, and some cold climate models reach even higher. That gap in efficiency translates directly into lower monthly energy bills.
This calculator takes your current system's efficiency rating, your home's square footage, and your local electricity rate, then estimates what you could reasonably expect to save per year by upgrading to a higher-efficiency heat pump. It's a useful first step in understanding the payback period on a new system, especially when you factor in available rebates.
Already know your current SEER rating? You're ready to go. Not sure? A rough estimate based on your system's age works fine — the calculator accounts for that.

Actual heat pump sizing requires a professional assessment considering factors such as insulation levels, air infiltration, ceiling heights, and local climate conditions. All recommendations are subject to a detailed evaluation by licensed HVAC technicians. Equipment selection and sizing must comply with manufacturer specifications and local building codes.
Heat Pump Sizing Calculator: Find the Right System Size for Your Home
Installing the right-sized heat pump matters more than most homeowners realize. An undersized system will run constantly, struggle on the coldest days, and wear out faster. An oversized system will short-cycle — switching on and off too frequently — which reduces efficiency, increases wear, and often leads to uneven temperatures and humidity problems throughout the home.
Proper sizing is based on a Manual J load calculation, which takes into account your home's insulation levels, window area, ceiling height, local climate data, and other factors. A certified installer like ECM performs a full Manual J as part of the site assessment before recommending any system.
This calculator gives you a reliable preliminary estimate. Enter your home's square footage, general insulation quality, number of floors, and a few other details, and the tool will return a suggested capacity range in tons or BTUs. Use it to go into your consultation with a baseline understanding of what size system your home likely needs — and why.
Note: This tool provides an estimate only. Final sizing for your installation will be confirmed by ECM during your free site assessment.
The federal and provincial rebate landscape is genuinely complex. The programs you qualify for and the amounts available to you depend on several factors. Such as your current heating fuel, your household income, whether you're a Utilities Kingston customer or an Enbridge Gas customer, the type of heat pump you're installing, and whether your home has been previously assessed under NRCan's EnerGuide program.
This checker cuts through the noise. Answer a few straightforward questions about your home and current heating setup, and it will map out which programs are currently open to you, what you could receive from each, and how those amounts stack up together. It covers Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program, the Canada Greener Homes Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program, the Canada Greener Homes Loan, and applicable federal incentives.
It takes about two minutes to complete and gives you a realistic picture of your total rebate potential before you spend a dollar or sign anything.
Want someone to verify your results and confirm eligibility? The team reviews every rebate pathway with you as part of your free consultation, including any stacking opportunities across multiple programs.

What type of system interests you?
Heat Pump Types
Cold Climate Air Source: Uses outdoor air to heat/cool your home. Works in temperatures as low as -30°C. Most popular option.
Ground Source (Geothermal): Uses underground temperature to heat/cool. Most efficient but requires space for underground loops. Higher upfront cost.
Ductless Mini-Split: A type of air source heat pump that doesn't require ductwork. Great for homes without existing ducts.

Do I qualify for Ontario's $7,500 or $12,000 rebate?
1
Eligibility depends on your current heating fuel and the type of heat pump you install. Homeowners heating with electricity, oil, propane, or wood may qualify for up to $7,500 for a Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump, or up to $12,000 for a Geothermal system, through the Home Renovation Savings Program. Enbridge Natural Gas customers may qualify for up to $2,000 for a Cold Climate ASHP. Use the Rebate Eligibility Checker above for a quick estimate, or contact ECM for a personalized assessment before installation.
What if I currently heat with oil?
2
Oil-to-heat-pump conversions are among the most generously supported upgrades available right now. Through the Canada Greener Homes Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program, eligible homeowners can receive up to $10,000 toward switching from oil to a qualifying heat pump, with additional grants of up to $15,000 available in co-delivered provinces and a $250 one-time incentive on top of that. You may not need a home energy evaluation to apply. Reach out to confirm what you qualify for before getting started.
Do I need a home energy assessment?
3
It depends on the program. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program does not require a home energy evaluation for heat pump installations — you can move directly to installation, which keeps the process simpler and faster. The Canada Greener Homes Grant does require a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, though up to $600 is available to help offset those costs. The team can walk you through exactly what each applicable program requires for your home.
How much does heat pump installation cost?
4
Costs vary by system type, home size, and whether you're working with existing ductwork. Ductless mini-split systems typically run $3,500–$6,000 per indoor unit. Ducted air-source systems range from $12,000–$20,000. Geothermal systems range from $10,000–$30,000. Government rebates of up to $7,500 (air-source) or $12,000 (geothermal) significantly reduce the out-of-pocket cost. We provide free, no-pressure quote and show you exactly how available rebates apply to your project before you commit to anything.
What type of heat pump do I need?
5
The right system depends on your home's existing setup, available space, and long-term goals. If you have a centralized ducted system, a central air source heat pump integrates directly with your existing furnace. If you heat with electric baseboards or a boiler, a ductless mini-split is typically the better fit. For properties with available land, geothermal provides outstanding year-round performance with no backup heat required. Start with the Heat Pump Sizing Calculator above, then let us get the team to assess your home for a precise recommendation.
Do heat pumps work in -30°C winters?
6
Cold climate heat pumps do, yes. Traditional models stop providing heat below -5°C to -10°C, but the cold climate systems ECM installs are specifically designed for Kingston's winters and continue operating down to -30°C. On the rare days where temperatures drop below that, the heat pump shuts off automatically and your secondary system — such as a furnace — takes over to keep your home warm.
Can I use a heat pump with my existing furnace?
7
Absolutely. Central air source heat pumps integrate directly with existing ducted furnaces — whether natural gas, oil, propane, or electric. The heat pump handles heating and cooling throughout the majority of the year at a lower running cost, while the furnace acts as a reliable backup on the coldest days. It's one of the most popular setups for Kingston homes and often the most straightforward upgrade path.
What's the difference between air-source and geothermal?
8
Air-source heat pumps extract heat from outdoor air. They're available in central ducted and ductless configurations and are the right choice for most Kingston homes. Geothermal systems draw from stable underground temperatures instead, which means they perform exceptionally even in extreme cold — with no backup heating system required. Geothermal carries a higher upfront cost but qualifies for rebates up to $12,000 and has underground loops with a 50+ year lifespan, making it the strongest long-term investment if your property allows for it. We can compare both options for your specific home during a free consultation.
